A great challengeBREAKING NEWS: The Dominican tourism industry’s purchases of the country’s farm products will continue to grow, but cautioned farmers to offer them to the Bavaro-Punta Cana zone in optimal conditions and fair prices.
Ernesto Veloz, president of the Association of Hotels and Tourist Projects of the East said Dominican farmers have a great challenge to improve the marketing of their products in the country’s tourism regions. The hotel sector requires that these products reach us in optimal conditions; healthy, fresh, clean, appropriately ripened, of uniform size, without spots, bruises, without diseases, free of rot and without discoloration.
The hotelier, speaking in the Agro-nourishment fair 2009, sponsored by the Dominican Agribusiness Board (JAD) and the Dominican Exports and Investments Center (CEI-RD), noted that the hoteliers have a responsibility with their guests by conducting periodic evaluations of the products they present, since they are subject to international quality standards. We must be careful, since any mishap can result in the loss of one season, with the consequent losses this implies.
Veloz said the distance from the agricultural zones and the intermediaries make it difficult to obtain competitive prices. It’s because of this that it’s urgent to create mechanisms and apply a modern technology which allows them to produce and sell at lower prices.
Pointing to statistics on the consumption of goods by hotels, especially in the Punta Cana-Bavaro sector, Veloz noted that in 2006, that region consumed 92 million pounds of farm goods, or 55 percent of the total hotel demand, mainly dairy products, fruits, fish, seafood, vegetables, tubers and processed meats.
He said the hotels consumed 32.5 million pounds of fruits (RD $360 million); 20.4 million of food (RD $198 million), and 22.7 million of vegetables (RD $348 million).
Producers must also take into account several factors such as that coast’s future development, he said, which added to the growth projection in 10 years there’ll be a total of 40,000 rooms, 10,000 houses and 20 golf courses.
Once these goals are reached current consumption will triple, generating 4 billion dollars in income from tourism, with an additional demand of 75 billion pesos in foods, beverages, goods and services, which would entail the creation of 76,890 new jobs as well.
